AO Trauma Course—Trauma Around the Knee

Goal

Participants will learn the current management of patient problems related to trauma around the knee. Fractures from the hip to the ankle will be covered as well as joint injuries and dislocations and soft tissue injuries. Special attention will be focused on posterior surgical approaches for treatment of fractures and ligamentous knee injuries.

Target participants

Orthopedic and trauma surgeons with 3-5 years of post-residency experience treating patients with lower extremity fractures. Focus of the participants should be surgeons who want to develop their knowledge and expertise in the management of trauma around the knee.

Objectives

At the end of this course, participants will be able to: • Discuss or explain relevant topographic and functional anatomy in the context of complex distal femur, patella and proximal tibial fractures • Describe and apply the main principles to achieve the best results in the treatment of periprosthetic fractures and ligamentous injuries around the knee • Identify the key issues in analyzing of lower leg alignment and define appropriate treatment options for surgical correction of malalignment • Perform a state-of-the-art osteosynthesis of fractures and corrective osteotomies around the knee

Description

A combination of evidence-based lectures and small-group case discussions will be used to deliver the content to improve knowledge and skills in the key surgical techniques and in related care. Active engagement by all participants is critical to the effective delivery of this educational event. Please note that participants are required to attend 80% of the event in order to receive the course certificate.
